Obituary for Richard Gary Abel

Richard G. Abel played his final inning on Monday, November 4, 2019. He was 79 years young. Memorial Mass services will take place on Tuesday, November 12th at 10 am at St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church 215 W. Walnut St. Lodi, Ca 95240, followed by reception.

Rich was born in Oakland, Ca to Harry and Dorothy Abel. He is the oldest of 4 children. He graduated from El Cerrito High School in 1958. He then went to Contra Costa Community College for two years and then on to San Francisco State University where he obtained a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees. Rich always had a love of learning and sports. After college, Rich, taught in the Bay Area. He was a basketball coach at Richmond High School.

He then came to Lodi, Ca with his family; first wife, Loretta and daughter, Melissa. After four years of administration at Lodi High he took on the role of Assistant Principal at Tokay High School in 1981, where he eventually became Vice Principal, and then retired as Principal in 2001.

After losing his wife to cancer in 1991, he remarried in 1992; second wife, Betty and daughter, Coralyn. Rich loved to travel with his wife and see the world. He especially loved going on Jay Buckley’s Baseball Tours and seeing all 30 major league fields. He was a fan of sports, theatre, music and community service.

Rich was involved in numerous service clubs after retirement; Eagles, Kiwanis, SIRs. And he was a proud supporter of his church, St. Anne’s, by being part of the Knights of Columbus.

Richard is preceded in death by his first wife and both parents. He is survived by his wife; Betty, his 2 daughters; Melissa Sbragia, Coralyn, grandson; Nicolaus Sbragia, brother; Dennis, 2 sisters; Donna Chin, Terri Daniels, and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and adopted grandchildren of friends.

The family wishes to show gratitude to the Lodi Fire Department (Station 4), the amazing nursing staff at Vitas Healthcare Hospice of Modesto and Brandy Maple of Park View Cemetery & Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make donations to Vitas Healthcare Hospice, or any local children's activities such as sports teams, visual or preforming arts, or schools.
